Dr. Alaa Khamis is an Associate Professor at Suez University, Adjunct Professor at Nile University and IEEE Robotics and Automation Society – Egypt Chapter Founder and Chair. He worked as Head of Advanced Development Division at Sypron Solutions, AI Consultant at Menya Solutions, Inc. and Senior Research Scientist at Vestec, Inc., Canada, Robotics and Automation Consultant at InnoVision Systems, Director of Engineering R&I - Canada at Marques Aviation Ltd., Associate Professor and Director of Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) research group at German University in Cairo (GUC), Research Assistant Professor and Cooperative Algorithms and Machine Intelligence Lecturer at University of Waterloo, Canada, Visiting Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain and Universite de Sherbrooke, Canada, a Visiting Researcher at University of Reading, UK and Distinguished Scholar at FH Ravensburg-Weingarten, Germany. - His research interests include cooperative multi-robot systems, algorithmic robotics, humanitarian robotics, smart factory, intelligent data processing and analysis, combinatorial optimization and machine learning. He published 4 books, 5 book chapters, 16 technical reports and more than 75 scientific papers in refereed journal and international conferences. He also has 5 provisional US patents.  

The fourth industrial revolution Industry 4.0

represents a new paradigm shift from “centralized” to “decentralized” industry relies on cyber-physical based automation where sensors send data directly to the cloud and services such as monitoring, control and optimization automatically subscribe to necessary data in real-time. In the coming years, these technologies will be seen as a viable alternative to current manufacturing processes. According to a recent report by Markets and Markets, smart factory technology will have global market size of 74.80 Billion USD by 2022. The talk will provide a comprehensive introduction to Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory. Technical challenges and social implications of smart factory will be discussed. The applicability of these emerging technologies in developing economies and the initiatives taking place in Egypt will be highlighted in this talk as well.
